Update 1.009.0 of Patron brought some needed ease-of-use in the process of creating a new map. A lot of the manual work is no longer needed. The game does some of it for you. Below, you'll also find a 9-minute video showing the in-game editing tools and how to use them. We'll update both the article and the video as further improvements and changes to the tools are made.
Setting up a new map[]
Follow these simple steps to setup a new map:
- In the in-game options on the General tab, enable the map editor. Apply the changes.
- Restart the game
- Proceed to New game and select the Template map. Start it.
- Press F4 (default), Edit to your heart's desire
- Use the editor toolbar to Save As New Map
- A small popup will appear where you must type in the name of the map
- Restart the game and the new map will be available as a playable map. You can further edit it of course, but keep in mind that all existing buildings WILL BE SAVED AS WELL.
What this essentially does is that the game creates the necessary folder structure and files, and injects a new entry in the Maps database table. What this DOESN'T do is create a mod. This has to be done manually. To be more precise, if you want to create a mod to share, for example on Steam Workshop, you'll have to follow our other tutorials, extract the needed content and data and pack the mod up for sharing. If you're not interested in sharing your creative work, then this will do just fine.
Using the in-game editing tools[]
A picture is worth a thousand words, they say. How about a video?
